Visionary Art & Architecture
Alex Grey & Erik Davis

On the evening of December 7, one of the world's greatest contemporary visionary artists, NYC's own renowned Alex Grey, and the brilliant San Francisco cultural critic Erik Davis will engage in a spirited dialogue about the role of visionary art and architecture, both historically and in the present.

Grey will discuss the history of sacred art and the aspirations embedded in his own work, ranging from his extraordinary paintings and sculptures to his multi-media forays to his design of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors.

Davis will draw from his brand new book, The Visionary State: A Journey through California's Spiritual Landscape, which weaves deeply informed text and stunning images into a compelling narrative of religion, architecture and consciousness in California. Don't miss this meeting of two dazzling minds.

AWARD-WINNING BUDDHIST FILM AT COSM! ONE NIGHT ONLY!

On Friday, December 15th, CoSM will present two special screenings of Marc Rosenbush's award-winning Buddhist film, ZEN NOIR.

An unique and original blend of vaudevillian comedy, Buddhist philosophy, and surreal art film, ZEN NOIR follows a nameless detective as he investigates a mysterious death in a Buddhist temple, but his logical, left-brained investigative skills are completely useless in the intuitive, non-linear world of Zen.

Increasingly confused and unnerved, and haunted by his dead wife's ghost, he finds himself drawn into a deeper, more personal mystery, where he must confront terrifying questions about loss, identity and the inevitability of change and death.

ZEN NOIR is an unusual film that evolves and transforms itself even as you watch. It's a comedy, a mystery, a love story and ultimately, a powerful spiritual journey, both for the detective and for the audience.

Join us on Friday, December 15th, for two screenings of ZEN NOIR, at 7:00 p.m. and 9:15 p.m.

PSYCHOPTICON ANIMATRIS:
Tour of Altered States in Film

Presented by Jon Hanna

Friday, December 22nd
7:30 p.m.

$10 includes popcorn and a bottle of water.

Less than 50 years after the invention of the motion picture, the first animated movie was produced.  Cartoonist Émile Cohl’s 1908 film Fantasmagorie depicted a stick figure dancing across the screen, encountering a multitude of morphing objects; a wine bottle that transformed into a flower might have symbolized the transcendent potential of inebriation.

One of the earliest animated film stars, created in 1919, was Otto Messmer’s Felix the Cat.  In 1928, Felix’s mug was the first image ever to be broadcast on television, heralding an era of hypnotic trance states in viewers since that time. Yet it was two years earlier that Felix himself spaced out on film.  Soused on moonshine, the cat hallucinates malevolent demons and flying elephants…

Jon Hanna is a skull farmer specializing in neurobotany and memetic engineering. He also produces the Mind States conference series. Click animation for more information.
