A Conversation between Donald Kuspit and Alex Grey
March 16th, 7pm, $10
Join world renowned art critic, Donald Kuspit and artist Alex Grey, as they discuss current cultural conditions. Mr. Kuspit's recent book, The End of Art, has stirred debate about postmodernism, both analyzing and questioning the psyche of the mainstream artworld. His recent controversial exhibition of "New Old Masters" in California presented an alternative to what he calls "PostArt." His essay, "Re-examining the Spiritual In Art", probes the dilemma of the contemporary artist attempting to make "sacred" art.
Donald Kuspit is an art critic and a professor of art history and philosophy at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He received the 1997 Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Contribution to Visual Arts from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. He is a 1983 recipient of the College Art Association's prestigious Frank Jewett Mather Award for Distinction in Art Criticism. He is a contributing editor at Artforum, Sculpture, and New Art Examiner magazines, the editor of Art Criticism, and the editor of a series on American Art and Art Criticism for Cambridge University Press. He has been awarded fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Fulbright Commission, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation, among others. An author of numerous articles, exhibition reviews, and catalog essays, Kuspit has written more than twenty books, including Redeeming Art: Critical Reveries (Allworth Press), Daniel Brush, Joseph Reid Raffael, Chihuly, and Idiosyncratic Identities: Artists at the End of the Avant-Garde. Drawing from the Subtle Body
Sunday March 19th, 12 noon - 5pm
Join Alex Grey in drawing the human energy field! Via slide lecture participants will examine the subtle body from a cross cultural art historical perspective. Through guided meditations, we will envision our own subtle energies and then draw from a live model focusing on each of the 7 chakras, making seven drawings each predominating in a different color and interweaving our sense of the body's energy centers and auras. Selected music keys us into the flow and character of each energy center. Participants are empowered by the process of bringing inner visions to outer graphic form. Class members must bring their choice of drawing materials such as colored pencils or pastels, watercolors and an 11 x 14" sketch book.
