CoSM Jounral of Visionary Culture Vol. 8: COMMUNITY
We are honored to celebrate the release of CoSM Journal #8 highlighting the theme of Community. Heart-centered communities around the world are manifesting temples and soul inspired activism. In this issue we got to interview some of our heroes.
Community is the ocean in which we swim. We are all products of associations that have shaped the development of our ways of thinking and being. Evolution is inter-subjective, through conversations with friends we share our values and inner worldviews and discover better ways of being. Communities shaped by higher consciousness and conscience are vital keys to a sustainable relationship with the planetary lifeweb.
The wiser our partnerships and alliances with groups, the better our personal lives and culture will become. It makes sense that the company we keep can further our personal and collective transformation or slow our progress. What values and ideals do sacred communities live by? To prepare this issue of CoSM Journal we contacted inspirational leaders and asked their personal views or philosophy of group life, and about the body, mind and spirit of their community. The “body” includes the physical elements, the land, buildings or website platform that hosts their community. The “mind” includes the community’s governance, ground rules and operating system, how they get things done. The “spirit” includes their community’s practices, beliefs and rituals.
One of the three pillars of Buddhism is Sangha, a congregation that practices together and empowers each other. We spoke with Roshi Joan Halifax, a brilliant Zen teacher, on the ground rules that have kept her tradition alive and progressing for centuries. Sacred communities are task oriented. They get things done, like supporting everyone’s spiritual development, feeding or clothing the needy, or building temples. Associating with higher positive influences can individually and collectively quicken our consciousness to the next evolutionary level. Our dear friend, Ken Wilber reflects on the challenges of transforming the “We” space. How do we create group coherence? Prayer, meditation, song, dance, and collective creative projects unite a community that imagines the subtle energetic luminous web of intelligence between us all.
Grateful appreciation to the courageous tribes of visionary artists and community builders who appear in this issue, including the remarkable projects and presence of the artist, Swoon, who works worldwide with friends to uplift and inspire battered communities. The Himalayan Art master Romio Shrestra shares his reflections on art and relationships. Jen Ingram of Tribe 13, reports her successful efforts to bring Visionary Art and Festival Culture together. Volume 8: The Community issue of CoSM Journal shares wisdom distilled from years of social experiments on how people can get along and make something beautiful together.
Of course you can always pick up a CoSM Journal when you visit CoSM in the Hudson Valley. It’s blooming beautiful around here. Join us this weekend at CoSM, where we will be contributing to the multi-artist muraling project going on in The Mushroom Cafe. Come watch us work on our paintings in the Cafe on Sunday from 1-5pm.
