2026 Foundations: Sketching Retreat with Miles Johnston
ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
THIS WORKSHOP IS SOLD OUT! JOIN THE WAITLIST: [email protected]
Reconnect with your original curiosity and reclaim your creative drive.
Making art is challenging. It demands years of committed practice, patience, and a level of focus that is increasingly difficult to find in a world designed to distract us. This workshop will be a chance for artists to come together in a beautiful setting and to reconnect with our original curiosity and drive to make art.

Silent Scream, 2025, Miles Johnston
The deepest source of motivation comes from personal insight. As budding artists, we may view ‘the old masters’ as ‘art gods’, putting them on a pedestal and subtly reinforce a separation between our work and theirs.

Burnout, 2025, Miles Johnston
By meeting artists, hearing their stories and seeing their growth over time, witnessing first hand their ordinary humanness, we can see the artists we admire as fully real and flawed human beings.
“That is the transformational insight: Artists are just people, I am a person. I can be an artist too, I could also paint like that.”
—Miles Johnston

Extinguished, 2021, Miles Johnston
This knowledge is the most enduring motivation, that through practice we are capable of higher levels of creativity. We may be increasingly willing to make the sacrifices needed to benefit our practice, when we hold the rewards as real.
The goal for this workshop is for you to leave knowing you are cabable of create the artwork of your dreams, and to have a clear plan on what it will take to get there. Commitment and Will can spark enduring transformation in your artwork, allowing this workshop to be a turning point in your artistic practice.

Unburdened, 2025, Miles Johnston

Shelter, 2018, Miles Johnston
WHO IS THIS FOR?
This class welcomes artists of various levels of experience. Maybe you are just starting out and want to know how to practice in an effective way? Perhaps you are a working professional artist with confidence in your technical abilities, yet may still be seeking the essential ‘why’ drawing is important to your work.
This creative retreat is an opportunity to step outside of the flow of your daily life and get in touch with that creative spark innate to all of us. Miles’ intention for the workshop is for you leave feeling motivated and ready to do what it takes to become the artist you want to be.

Nurture, 2024, Miles Johnston
Participants are encouraged to bring examples of their portfolios and work. The aim of this artistic journey is to be reinvigorated and inspired, so that all artists committed to their own path may step into their personal realization of a "creative powerhouse."
No attempt shall be made to reshape or redefine your own vision, merely to empower you to fully commit to your own path. Miles feels it’s not his place to tell you how to use the tools. Art is a practice with the potential to shape and enrich our creative life, a passion and joy that can be shared.

Loss, 2017, Miles Johnston
Limited space is available. This workshop is intentionally kept at an intimate capacity to allow for meaningful and personalized mentorship throughout the program.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR:
Miles Johnston

Miles Johnston works primarily in graphite and oils, using the human form to explore the intensity and strangeness of the collective human experience. Through the distortion and transformation of their subjects, they represent the internal states we inhabit during pivotal moments in life. Rather than focusing on literal representation, Miles Johnston captures the surreal and abstract qualities of subjectivity to create work with a deep emotional resonance.
