How CoSM collects, uses, and protects information

Effective date: July 10, 2026

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (“CoSM,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information when you visit cosm.org and other webpages that link to this Privacy Policy (collectively, the “Site”).

This Privacy Policy applies to the informational and marketing features of the Site. Separate services, including the CoSM Shop, ticketing platforms, donation processors, membership platforms, livestreaming services, and other third-party websites, may have their own privacy policies.

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide

You may provide information to us when you:

  • Subscribe to a newsletter or mailing list;

  • Contact us or submit an inquiry;

  • Register your interest in an event or program;

  • Request information about visiting, membership, donations, or other CoSM activities; or

  • Otherwise communicate with us.

Depending on the interaction, this information may include your name, email address, telephone number, mailing address, message, communication preferences, and any other information you choose to provide.

Please do not submit sensitive personal information through general contact forms or by email unless it is necessary and we specifically request it.

Information collected automatically

When you visit the Site, we and our service providers may automatically collect certain technical and usage information, including:

  • Internet Protocol address;

  • Browser and device type;

  • Operating system;

  • Referring and exit pages;

  • Pages viewed and links selected;

  • Approximate geographic location derived from an IP address;

  • Dates, times, and duration of visits; and

  • Information concerning errors, performance, and interactions with the Site.

We may collect this information through server logs, cookies, pixels, analytics services, and similar technologies.

Information processed by third parties

The Site may direct you to services operated by third parties, such as:

  • Newsletter and email-delivery providers;

  • Donation and payment processors;

  • Event registration or ticketing platforms;

  • Membership platforms;

  • Video, social-media, mapping, and embedded-content providers;

  • Website hosting, security, analytics, and performance providers; and

  • The separately operated CoSM Shop.

If you provide information directly to one of these services, that provider processes the information under its own privacy policy and terms. CoSM generally does not receive complete payment-card or financial-account information processed by an independent payment provider.

2. How We Use Information

We may use information to:

  • Operate, maintain, secure, and improve the Site;

  • Respond to questions and requests;

  • Send newsletters, event announcements, and other communications you requested;

  • Provide information about exhibitions, programs, workshops, visits, donations, memberships, and CoSM’s mission;

  • Understand how visitors use the Site;

  • Diagnose technical problems and measure Site performance;

  • Prevent fraud, misuse, security incidents, and unlawful activity;

  • Maintain records and administer communication preferences;

  • Comply with legal obligations; and

  • Protect the rights, safety, and property of CoSM, our visitors, and others.

We may aggregate or de-identify information so that it no longer reasonably identifies an individual. We may use such information for research, reporting, analytics, and operational purposes.

3. Email Communications

If you subscribe to a CoSM mailing list, we may send you news concerning events, exhibitions, programs, fundraising, membership, and other CoSM activities.

You may unsubscribe by using the link included in a marketing email. We may still send non-marketing communications when appropriate, such as responses to your inquiries or notices concerning a transaction or relationship you have with CoSM.

Unsubscribing from one mailing list may not automatically unsubscribe you from a separate list or service.

4. Cookies and Similar Technologies

The Site may use cookies and similar technologies that are:

  • Essential, to operate and secure the Site;

  • Functional, to remember settings and preferences;

  • Analytical, to understand traffic and improve performance; or

  • Embedded-service related, to display maps, videos, social-media content, or other third-party features.

Your browser may allow you to delete or reject cookies. Disabling some technologies may affect Site functionality.

Where legally required, we will request consent before using nonessential cookies. If the Site displays a cookie-preference tool, you can use it to manage the categories of cookies covered by that tool.

Some browsers provide “Do Not Track” signals. Because there is not a universally accepted standard for responding to these signals, the Site may not respond to every such signal. Where applicable law requires recognition of a particular browser-based preference signal, we will process it as required.

5. How We Disclose Information

We may disclose information:

To service providers

We may provide information to organizations that perform services for us, such as website hosting, security, analytics, email delivery, technical support, and communications. These organizations may use the information only as permitted by their agreements with us and applicable law.

At your direction

We may disclose information when you ask us to do so or when it is necessary to complete an interaction you requested.

For legal and safety purposes

We may disclose information if we reasonably believe it is necessary to:

  • Comply with law, legal process, or a lawful governmental request;

  • Enforce our agreements or protect our legal rights;

  • Detect, prevent, or investigate fraud, security incidents, or misuse; or

  • Protect the safety or property of CoSM, our community, or others.

In connection with an organizational change

Information may be transferred in connection with a merger, reorganization, financing, sale of assets, or similar organizational transaction, subject to applicable law.

With related CoSM organizations

Information may be shared among CoSM-related nonprofit or religious organizations when reasonably necessary to operate the Site, administer programs, respond to requests, and further CoSM’s mission.

6. Sale and Targeted Advertising

CoSM does not sell personal information for money.

If CoSM later uses advertising technologies that constitute “selling,” “sharing,” or targeted advertising under applicable privacy law, we will provide any notice and choice mechanism required by that law.

7. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, including to provide requested communications, maintain appropriate records, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and protect the Site.

Retention periods depend on the type of information, the nature of our relationship with you, legal requirements, and operational needs. We may retain aggregated or de-identified information for longer periods.

8. Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards intended to protect personal information. However, no website, network, transmission, or storage system is completely secure. We cannot guarantee the absolute security of information.

Email is not necessarily secure. Please do not send payment-card information, account passwords, or similarly sensitive information through ordinary email.

9. Your Choices and Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights concerning your personal information, such as the right to:

  • Request access to personal information;

  • Request correction or deletion;

  • Obtain a portable copy of certain information;

  • Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent;

  • Object to or restrict certain processing;

  • Opt out of certain sales, sharing, or targeted advertising; and

  • Appeal our response to a privacy request.

These rights are subject to legal exceptions and may not apply in every jurisdiction.

To submit a request, contact us using the information below. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. An authorized agent may submit a request when permitted by law, but we may require evidence of the agent’s authority and verification of the individual’s identity.

You may unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time using the unsubscribe link in the message.

We will not unlawfully discriminate against you for exercising an applicable privacy right.

10. Children’s Privacy

The Site is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information online from children under 13 without appropriate parental consent.

If you believe a child has provided personal information through the Site in violation of this section, please contact us so that we can investigate and, where appropriate, delete it.

Information about children provided in connection with an event, ticket, program, or other service may be governed by separate notices and procedures.

11. Visitors Outside the United States

CoSM is located in New York, United States. If you access the Site from another country, your information may be transferred to, stored in, and processed in the United States or other countries where our providers operate.

Privacy laws in those locations may differ from the laws where you live. Where required, we use an appropriate legal basis and safeguards for international processing and transfers.

12. Third-Party Websites and Embedded Content

The Site may contain links to or content from third parties, including donation processors, ticketing services, maps, videos, social networks, and the CoSM Shop.

We do not control the privacy, security, or data practices of independent third parties. Their practices are governed by their own policies. We encourage you to review those policies before providing information.

A link to a third-party website does not necessarily mean that CoSM endorses all of its content or practices.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. We will post the revised version on the Site and change the effective date above.

If a change materially affects how we use information already collected, we will provide any additional notice or obtain any consent required by law.
